stubborn prop removal

Posted by valkyrie_1996 (akuehne@…>)

I recently bought a Kiwi Prop for my F-35. I have tried removing the
old fixed two blade prop with a wheel puller and as hard as I could
crank the puller, the prop won’t budge. I’m considering heating the
prop and was wondering if that could harm the cutlass bearing? Also,
if I try hitting the prop with a hammer will I harm the shaft seal or
transmission? I’m not concerned about saving the old prop, but I don’t
want to damage anything else in the removal process.

Art,

I have found that a little WD-40 and lots of time (24hrs) works
wonders. I have sprayed it on very rusted bolts that I thought would
never come off, waited 24hrs and they came right off. WD-40 was
developed for NASA, so you might as well get the most of your already
spend tax dollars!

Best of luck, Vince.

I just pulled the prop off my 1996 F35. I loosened the nut a few turns then
applied as much torque to the puller as possible and struck the puller bolt.
The bolt was aligned with and up against the nut and shaft. I then heated
the brass prop shaft housing with a propane torch and again applied torque
to the puller and it slid off. I was told to not strike the prop with a
hammer, may be because of damage to the prop. I would avoid any lateral
impact or stress to the prop or shaft.

Try heating the prop with a torch (not red hot). Then drip some cold water onto the shaft itself (not the prop), the shaft will cool quickly breaking free from the prop. Usually works every time.
