Just wondered if anyone could recommend a competent, reasonable
surveyor in Deale (35 miles south of Annapolis) or the surrounding

I’m
not sure that “competent” and “insurance” are words I’d
use in the same sentence. If you want a really good surveyor, call David
Manning, 410-263-5852. However, he charges almost as much for an
insurance survey as he does for a pre-purchase survey. For a cheaper insurance
survey, you might consider Hartoft Marine Survey, http://www.hartoftmarinesurvey.com/rates.html.

David Manning did the survey on my 1st boat, an Ericson 29. He was so thorough, the survey nearly talked me out of buying the boat! Which in hindsight, would have been the right thing to do. Not because of the make, rather age, and all the wonderous repair items that brings. Also taught me to stay away from gas engines… (A4)

I can’t recommend a surveyor in Deale. When I bought Bright Star there
in 2004, I used Hartoft. He sent someone else to do the survey, which
was fine, but she was on the phone so much that she missed some very
obvious things like placards that existed when she said they didn’t and
motor mounts that were one season old that she said needed replacing.
Even as the buyer of this boat, I was less than pleased with how it
went. Things may have improved in 4 years, but if you go with Hartoft,
make sure that turning the cellphone off is a part of the agreement, or
you may get less than you’re paying for.

Interesting.
The woman was probably Gale Browning, who is a racer as well as a
surveyor. You must have used her when she was lining up support for her
mini-transat race. Still no excuse, though. I mentioned Hartoft
simply because they do very inexpensive insurance surveys, and not everyone
wants an insurance survey to be too thorough.
