Things to look for on a survey - freedom 40/40

First post here and potential new freedom owner. I found a 40/40 for sale and the survey is tomorrow. This question is for the 40/40 owners. Are there any chronic problems that I should be aware of? I know the mast should be inspected for cracks, but is that an issue at the top of the mast as well? Seems to me the top is where to look as thats where the flexing happens.

Thanks to all.

Check the autopilot works . expensive item to replace

Check for water intrusion, keel bolts, rudder bearing. I previously owned a 1997 freedom 4040. I had a survey on a 1995 freedom 4040 where they found water intrusion in the hull which is cored. The mast on the 1997 4040 was solid never had a problem, also no water intrusion.

We just bought a 40/40 and have had to replace the entire rudder system. When trying to get it dropped we found the whole thing was seized and fused together. Parts aren’t available anymore, so we have a whole new rudder system going in soon.

That is a real bummer to hear about your rudder, but the new one will last another 30 years at least.

Survey went well today. Quite happy. There were some minor issues but nothing to scare me away. Thanks for all of the suggestions

One thing that really confused the surveyor and myself is that there was no steaming light on the mast, nor was there a place where we could see that one was once mounted. Another thing we were not sure about is where the spinnaker halyard exits the mast. There was a messenger line exiting below the fore stay, but that seems quite illogical, as you would have to jibe your spinnaker inside of it. Is that the way it should be?

Congratulations, we just bought a 40/40 as well.

Going to set it up this weekend so we can relocate next weekend.

Predicted wind was blowing wrong or not at all this weekend and tides weren’t favorable.

We need to get supplies/tools on board for multi day trip as well as familiarizing. Plus other obligations made timeline difficult

Where are you located?

Im in Rhode Island and will be keeping her on point judith salt pond.

Nice we are moving our from Marion Ma to Salisbury Ma on the Merrimac River.

The Perko light at the masthead is a steaming and anchor light combo. It has two bulbs one facing forward and the other aft. Forward bulb is on when steaming and both bulbs on when anchoring

Regulations insist that there be a second white light a certain distance below the tri-color to indicate you are underway power if your engine is being used. Theres a tri-color at thr mast head.
