I’m looking at another F-21. The tiller has rotted away and I need to
replace it. When I looked in Fawcett Boat, all the tillers are curved
except for one. None are the 46" that I have on the boat now. Does
anybody know what is standard issue tiller’s measurements are?

Hi Allen,
Look at West Marine “Laminated Replacement Tillers”. Web site shows 2
straigh one and some curved. Several are 46"+.

Allen: I replaced my tiller with an H&L tiller from West Marine,
originally sold for a J24. It has a slight curve to it, but actually
works better than the straight Freedom original, as it gives more knee
space. Only modification I had to make was to scab a pair of 1/8th in
mahogany cheek strips to the sides of the butt end, as the tiller is a
bit narrower than the rudder stock. This was done with epoxy, after
sanding the laminated tiller. The tiller is about 3 in longer than the
original, which was not a problem for me.

Thanks for information. I went to H&L and looked around. I didn’t
see a J24 tiller on there. However, I really like the idea of more
knee room like you said.

The new Freedom-21 has no staysail, nor does it have the
aluminun pole used as the staysail boom. I’m closing the deal next
week and plan to look the new boat over more carefully this weekend.
There were wasps hanging out in the sail cover.

I wonder how difficult it would be to fashion a tiller out of a
stock piece of wood.

Not very hard. I made an “extra” tiller, to stow on board, out of
the wooden handle from an unused wheel barrow. I laquered her up
with some nice varnish and drilled the holes in the right places. I
can’t imagine what could happen to break my existing tiller, but
whatever it is I’ll have an extra one handy. Yay me.

Peter, et al

I bought a handle from the hardware store last night. I think it was
for a posthole digger. With a couple of washers on either side of
the three holes to make up for 1/4 inch less in width, I think it
will work
for the time being. Thanks for the tip. The handle was $18 and it’s
a fashionable John Deer green.
