toilet questions

Posted by angiebera (angiebera@…>)

hey all,

just wanted some advice on marine toilets. we are replacing all the
hoses in the front head of our f45 and then decided to pull off the
toilet. we currently have a wilcox crittenden skipper that was
probably installed 10-15 years ago. it needs replacement parts that
will add up to about $150. i know that the wilcox is a good toilet, but
not sure if we should spend the money on it. we have also been told to
look into the raritan ph2 manual head. what type of head comes
standard with freedoms?

any advice would be appreciated!

I don’t know what is standard, but there seems to be virtually universal agreement that the PHII is the best marine head for under $1K. It won’t cost much more than the parts for your Skipper.

We just replaced a PHII with a Wilcox-Crittenden “Santa Cruz,” which
is a West Marine branded “Newport.” We looked at replacing the PHII
with another one, or with the PHIIe, and finally decided on the Wilcox
for a number of reasons, including: macerator vs no macerator, length
of warranty, and simplicity of operation. It’s a little loud, but so
far we’re quite satisfied with it. It should be a great complement to
the Lectrasan we’re going to install this winter.

What ever head you buy, try to get the full size bowl option, if
offered. The Raritan PH11’s fullsize option is called the “Highboy”.
Worth every penny. If it won’t fit on the footprint of the old head,
fabricate a SS plate and extend the shelf by a couple of inches.
Pictures available if interested.

Ladyhawk, my f45cc/020 came with 2 rairitan ph2’s. I replaced both of them with
the same units when I replaced my hoses. I’m happy with them, but a lot of
people like the w/c head. Contact me off line if you want to talk about them.

Last year I replaced the manual head on our Freedom 35 with the Jabsco Quiet
Flush. I decided to use fresh water (you can use either) to eliminate the
smell from some marina or river water. It was relatively easy to install
and works great.

I have two of the Raritan ph II heads in our F 45, and have rebuilt
them both, not a hard job. They work well.

I added macerator pumps to both heads, and the associated piping and
valves to give us the option of pumping out the head while
offshore. The holding tanks on the F 45 are small, thus, I wanted
the ability to pump out when needed.

Both heads are manual. Of in interest, every year there is a big
flea market in Dania florida and Raritan clears out their warehouse,
I bought a brand new pumping unit for my head to carry as a spare
for less than the cost of a rebuild kit at West Marine.

They have complete heads and all. The flea market is in april I
think.
