Transom Plugs and Forgetting to Take Them Out (and Advice on Bilge Pumps)

Anyone out there ever forget to take the plugs out of the transom after boating?

I did two weeks ago and went back to the boat today. I was surprise
by the cockpit being full of water, and the cabin having 2 inches on
water in it. Maybe it is time to install a bilge pump. Anyone have
advice on how install an automatic bilge pump?

Also, what sort of ingenuous ways have people come up with to
remember to pull the plugs? All I’ve come up with so far is to tie a
string from the plugs to the outboard in hopes that while raising the
outboard I will remember the plugs.

Thanks for any advice.

Jake,

I used scupper “flaps” rather than plugs. They mount on the outboard side
of the transom and cover the scupper with a rubber flap that is held in a
closed position by tension.

When water enters the cockpit and migrates towards the stern, it pushes the
flap open and the water runs out.

I found these reasonably effective. On occasion they will let water in, but
always worked to let the water out.


West Marine calls them “scupper valves”. The 2 3/4 inch size is perfect for
the F21 scuppers.

They were certainly more reliable than my memory.

Jake, I did some research on Scupper Valves.

Our transom holes are 1 1/4 " diameter.

Joe said he used the West Marine Seafit with 2 3/4 " diameter Rubber
flapper.

A Seadog part # 520500-1 is a 1 1/2 " flapper ( http://www.sea-
dog.com/916018.html ) and I think the plastic rim is 1 7/8 "
( http://www.iboats.com/products/16/39678_scupper_valve.html ).

Thus the rubber has a 1/8 " over-lap around the transom hole and the
rim has a 3/16 " over-lap around the rubber.

I think I am going to investigate the Seadog scupper further and will
probably install them if the above is correct.

Nick is right - the 1 7/8 size by Seadog is the correct size. It’s been a
few years since I owned my F21. Sorry for the mis-information.
