Upgrading Alternator on a Freedom 38

Posted by gjirak (gjirak@…>)

I would like to convert to AGMs on my Freedom 38 and would like to
upgrade to a BALMAR 100 AMP Alternator and a multistage regulator.
The boat has a 3GM30FYeu engine at 27hp. I measured the belt and it
appears to be 1/2 inch which surprised me since I thought it would be
3/8 inch which would allow only a 70 AMP alternator.

I plan on 3 AGMs for house, one starting battery and a Gel battery for
my windlass connected by a Echocharger which allows for adjustment in
voltage. Is 100 Amps to much for this engine? Any other recommendations?

George,

You can figure 25amps/HP so you will be using up to 4 HP. Most the
time even a 100A alt with smart reg will not put out 100A. Therefore
the 4HP loss is on the high side. Some people put a cut-out switch
on the field wiring. If you need full power to the prop, you can
drop out the alt power loss.

Regards,

Van

I upgraded my F35 3GM30 to a 80 amp Balmar.
I had 3 gp27 wet cells and installed 1 8d AGM for house and 1 gp 27 AGM for
starting. I seldom if ever need the starting battery and run refrigerator
all day and night. I selected the charger amperage based on some info
that said the max charger current should be related to the total amp hour of
the battery bank being charged. Probably Balmar or Xantrex information
but I don’t recall. Don’t forget that if you upgrade to AGM’s
both the alternator regulator and shore power charger need to upgraded to
handle AGM’s.

After a long night of using lights and refrigerator
my alternator will put out all 80 amps and I can see the engine load up (drop
in RPM) at idle speed as the charger kicks in. I had to raise my idle
speed a bit to cover this loading but have never had a problem with the engine,
alternator or regulator systems.

I replaced my alt on a Yan 3GM 30 F and I can say you are at the limit
with a 1/2 belt at 70 amps. Plus, the front end bearings in the engine
wont take more side load,so it is not possible to go larger than 70 amps.
