Ventilation port in the wall of the cockpit

Posted by Herman Schiller (hschiller2@…>)

Does anyone know which brand of opening port was installed in the
cockpit on an '87 Freedom 28 (Mull)? I need to purchase a new screen
for that port, but don’t know which brand. Herm

On the 87 F30, it’s a Bomar. Check the Pompanette/Bomar web site and see if it looks the same.

Weirdly, some of these were made by the Fuller Brush Company, which
handily supports their products even to this day…a nice thing in
these times of “immediate obsolesence” and non-availability of repair
parts…

Click the link below (or type it in) and go to the “Marine Products”
section…see if one of what’s there matches what YOU have…

(My cockpit vent port on my '81 Freedom 40 Aft Cockpit Cat Ketch is
one of these)

My F-33 and most US F-33s have the fuller
brush ports. I believe I told this story in a posting before.
Cruising in the Bahamas
in the late 70s on a Bristol
32 I was in the Exumas and met someone in the Fuller Brush family (can’t
remember if it was the son, grandson or the original Fuller). He said they were
long time cruisers and were never satisfied with the leaky ports. So having a
lot of experience in plastics they had these ports designed not to leak to
their specs (the two sizes they still offer were the only two molds and matched
the portlights sizes intheir boat at the time). They do not leak (in my
experience as well). The molds were extremely expensive and the ports were very
successful. Unlike most plastic ports that have thin plastic that bends and
thus can leak these are very stiff 5/8” solid thick and use a rubber
o-ring style gasket. I believe he also mentioned some kind of premium recipe
acrylic.

To be able to go online and order spare
screens and gaskets so many years later is a nice surpise.
