When I arrived at my F-30 today, I found a puddle of water at the
base of the mast, a first. The only things involving the mast that
changed before this water appeared were runnging a new wind
transducer cable down the mast (replacing the old one) and
tightening the bolt that holds the mast to its base. I find it hard
to see how either of these actions could be responsible. There wqere
no water stain marks elsewhere in the v berth which might have
pointed to a leak. I was also surpised to find that there is no
drainage from the v berth sole to the bilge. Or, if there is, it is
clogged. But where is it? I’d welcome any suggestions from other
Freedom owners as to the source of the water and/or the drainage
issue.
I have had the same issue on my F 28. When
we get a lot of rain water leaks out the base of the mast and onto the floor.
There are water stains on the bulkhead separating the main salon from the
forward cabin.

You’re right, there is no drainage from the vberth to the bilge. Two weeks ago I put my boat back in the water after removing the holding tank from the v berth. The sea cock to the overboard discharge was left open and it flooded the v berth. The only route the water could take was OVER the lower part of the vberth bulkhead. After much bailing and vacuuming, we finally got it cleared.
You might check your through-hulls in the v berth. One of mine leaks if I shut it off in a certain direction, but not if I turn it the other.

I have been experiencing the same issue
with water stains too. No standing water as I drilled a small hole just inside
the threshold to allow any seepage to drain to the bilge. I suspect water comes
in the halyard sheaves on the side of the mast or possibly from the top. It
must be only in severe storms, as during a normal rain, the base of the mast is
dry. This winter I plan to cover over the sheaves to prevent melting snow etc
from going in.

I appreciate all the responses. If my boat has limber holes from
the v-berth to the main salon, I haven’t found them. (I will add
one.) Nor did it rain particularly hard last week. It has rained a
lot since I bought the boat in the spring, and this is the first
time the water appeared at the base of the mast. (I can tell how
hard it rained by the amount of water caught in the pan under the
forward hatch.) As I noted, the only variables were running a new
cable down the mast and tightening the bolt at the base of the
mast. So I guess I’m still in search of an explanation.

Al,
any chance that you’ve got a ‘conduction’ leak, down the new cable?
maybe it isn’t sealed tightly at the mast head and where it comes out
down below? Or even running down the mast itself and leaking out the
base - pure conjecture on my part, but if you altered the seal by
pulling new cables, maybe something didn’t get properly re-sealed.’

The hole at the top of the mast is actually quite small as those
things go. It was not sealed before, and I did not seal it when I
ran the new cable down (although I do plan to seal it now). There
is no evidence that the mast collar is leaking. The exit hole for
the wires is at least four inches from the bottom of the mast, so a
lot of water would be necessary before that spilled over. A hose
applied to the base of the mast did not produce a leak.
A great mystery. Maybe I just need a small bilge pump at the base of
the mast. (Just kidding.)

My '87 f30 does have a limber hole at the base of the mast. I am
forced to remove my rig each winter so I clean it out in the off
season. It is not a heck of a lot bigger than the diameter of the
bent metal hanger I used to clean it out. It is in the logical
place, on the floor on the centerline at the aft end of the raised
mast step. I am not at all sure you can see it when the mast is in.
I did remove the small centerline floorboard immediately aft of the
forward cabin bulkhead to verify water flow, so if the hole is there
I bet you could see it from that side (I keep a dental type mirror
handy). Have you tried removing that floorboard? Go easy on the
screws, they are likely to be soft as might be the wood to which they
are attached at this point.
