Looking for an owners manual (actually the wiring diagram) for a West
Marine 3 step voltage regulator. The item number is: 450171 WELEC. It’s
a long shot. Boat is a F32 1984. Alt is a high output (105 A). Don’t
know the manufacturer. For some reason, I think it’s a 1990 vintage.
Looks like an after market add on, not original equipment. West Marine
hasn’t been able to help up to this point. They suggest taking the cover
off and look for some manufacturers numbers inside. I’ll try that in a
couple of weeks. Any info out there? Anyone?
Thanks,
Larry Kraus

Hi Larry,
is this the voltage regulator to the alternator, or is it going
somewhere else? If it’s an alternator regulator, and it’s 1990
vintage, you may want to consider replacing it anyway. On Bright
Star, the regulator was from 1997 when they put the big alternator
on, and it went in 2004. Replacement was pretty easy, and everything
is clearly labeled on a balmar or xantrex regulator.
I’m guessing by the number that this was a West-rebranded part
number, and if they don’t have records on it (go figure), then you
may be out of luck unless you do find an oem part number on it.
Sorry can’t be more help. Someone else on the board might have a
similar setup.

Here’s a reasonably (relatively speaking) priced replacement unit.
One thing to check first is that your alternator is a “P” type. This
simply means that the regulation voltage is happening on the positive
brush of the rotor. Also you can easily trouble shoot to make sure
the failure is the regulator by hooking a 12 volt bulb between the
positive lug on the alternator and the field (positive brush)
connection. The bulb should glow dimly and your alternator should put
out. For more details on this check in either the Nigel Calder books
or Charlie Wings book on boat electrics.
