What is this?

Posted by ajlorman (ajlorman@…>)

I’m still exploring my newly-acquired F-30 and on Saturday I trained
my binoculars on the masthead. In addition to the VHF antenna and
the wind transducer, there was an aft-facing bail. Anyone have any
clue as to its use? Would it be strong enough to attach a block to
use as a second halyard?

Many thanks.

Al, I have an F-28 same pedigree as your
30. My yard added to pad eyes and small blocks below and on the aluminum mast
head fixture on either side. One is an emergency second halyard which my
surveyor also recommended. The second is for a flag halyard.

My F30 has a similar mast head
arrangement. I have a second halyard which I use for a topping lift.

Thanks, Andy and Doug. The second halyard obviously must run
externally. Does that cause any problems, get hung up, wear the
paint off the mast, etc.?

Many thanks.

I tie it off to the life line stanchion on
the port side, flag halyard tied off on Starboard. As it is only for
emergencies, wear isn’t an issue. Checking the load rating on the pad eye
and block, it will easily carry 500 pounds, a boson’s chair if we have to
go up there. ( not me I might note!)
