I have a Freedom 28 (sloop, hull #9) and need to replace the head -
its currently a Groco HF, which I gather is pretty much bottom of the
line. Anyone with experience on other heads, which would also fit in
the limited space available? I’m only interested in manual flush.

I can recommend 3 heads for your boat.
Defender and St Brendan’s Isle stock them. I used to deal with SBI
because they would usually match or beat Defender and whoever I was
dealing with knew Lavac very well. Nigel Calder and Steve Dashew
both mention Lavac in their books.
