hi all
this weekend i am going to look at a 33 cat ketch. what are some of
the things i should be looking for. all boats have a weak spot that
needs that little bit of extra attention. looking at this will tell
me how well the owner has taken care of the boat. thanks for all your
input in the past
the hull is balsa cored, so look for signs of punctures of the
outer polyester skin, weak spots are deck hardware. rotted core can
be found by sounding with a small hammer. You can find the voids.
rudders are often leaking, check the front and aft seam of the
rudder.
check the engine and drive train on vibration → worn mounting
blocks
if carbon fibre masts: check for wear/electrolytic on fixing holes
and the mast base. The mast should be completely motionless in its
bottom plate. Make sure to check the masttrack and the masthead also!
if centreboard, check the board for wear on the sole, leaks and
blisters. Of course you check the hull for blisters also.
make sure all electronic gadgets work; don’t accept stories. This
stuff seldom starts working again by itself.
opening portholes always leak. This is not so much of a worry, but
damp and water ingress may have resulted in rotting bulkheads or
other interior parts.
check this board and the archives for all issues concerning the F33
and the F35 UK catketch (same boat as US F33 mk 1)

Greg: I’m in the San Francisco Bay area and am looking for an F33 or F28 cat-ketch centerboard but not much yet has shown up on the west coast. Would like to chat more about your search and compare notes a bit. Certainly a difference in hull and cabin layout between fixed keel and c/b (about '82) and even more variety of wishbone booms, wrap-around sails and various mast tracks. This is from the office so I (luckily won’t be back after 5PM until Monday.
