On our F 35 (P) in downwind condition, using the self tacking jib, we go wing on wing sometimes - a whisker pole would be good. Also in using our asymmetrical, on certain points of sail, keeping the sail full I’ve used our boat hook to the clew to keep sail shape ( not fun). Has anyone used a whisker pole? If so, what type and how did you mount it!?
I bought a heavy duty extendable aluminium paint roller pole
Attached it to the mast with a simple loop of rope then extend it to the clew of the sail , it holds fine
I’ve had the same issue where under certain conditions the camberspar will swing over to the other side, and then it will quickly switch back, over and over. It got tedious on a long downwind run, so I rigged up a sort of preventer that solved the problem. It’s just a bit of rope with a snap shackle at the end of it (normally used to secure the boom to a cleat when the sails are down). I clip the shackle to the clew fitting on the camberspar, then run it forward of the bow pulpit, back through the bail at the front of my anchor roller, and back to a bow cleat. The anchor bail is just far enough ahead of the clew that the line can bring it forward when tensioned. Once rigged, it needn’t be hauled in tight; it just needs enough tension where it will keep the sail where it is when the boat pitches and gravity tries to bring the spar over to the low side.
The only issue with this setup is that a sudden course change would potentially leave the sail backwinded, which would put a lot of stress in all the wrong places (until someone runs forward to release the preventer). However, this could be solved by running a longer line back to the cockpit. I’ve set up a line to the jib clew in a similar way, where it goes to a snatch block at the rail and then back to the cockpit so I can heave to, but I haven’t yet used it as a downwind preventer. So far my little utility rope works fine, as long as I’m on a long downwind course in light wind.
Yes, on our F32 (M) in downwind conditions that had lighter wind and waves – otherwise, it would tend to flop back and forth with the wave action. We used to store it in the aft cabin where it would fit between the mattress and the bulkhead, and when deploying it, it was attached to a spinnaker ring (not that we used it for a spinaker) that was mounted on the front of the mount for the rigid vang (was a stainless steel band which wrapped around the mast).
Thanks the responses. I bought a Forespare pole 7-15’ adj and a pole mast ring. Tuesday I’ll see how it fits or doesn’t. My idea for the self tacking jib is to tie a loop through one on the jib clew plate holes and clip the pole there. The asymmetrical is more straight forward. If it doesn’t work like I envision I’ll return the whole thing!
