Who has pics of clamp-on mast bracket for radar?

Posted by mike_c_f35ck (mike_c_f35ck@…>)

All,

I know I’ve seen pictures around on this board of a stainless clamp-
on mast bracket for mounting a radar. E.g. the F44 Bright Star has
such a solution. Could anyone provide some detail pics of the
construction? I thought i’d seen them here, but can’t anything.

Thanks!

Mike

There’s a pretty good pic of the garhauer (but at the base of the
mast so there may be some differences) near the end of the photo
section.

Mike,
the pictures you’re looking for are in the files/radar mount.

A little extra info about my radar mount. A couple weeks ago, there
was a very intense wind storm up here in Boston, with gusts up to
around 70 mph out of the west. Bright Star was on a N/S dock, and
before I got extra lines on her, she spent a fair amount of time
flashing her keel as the winds pushed her over. She’s fine, the rig’s
fine, everything’s fine…

…except the radar mount. Apparently, that big Furuno unit created
enough windage (never would have happened, I don’t believe, if I’d
been on a mooring) that it broke the mount free of its bedding
compound and rotated the whole unit about 20 degrees.

I need to go up there, take everything apart, and rebed the mount.
I’m not sure I’ll get to it until the spring, but when I do, I’ll
take detailed close-up pictures of the whole setup.

Lance, thanks for the pictures, and sorry to hear that you had
problems. What would have happened if the clamps would run all round
the mast, under the track? You could tighten the clamps more,
perhaps. It also seems as if the clamp material is stainless 304 and
thinner than the polished stainless 316 that Garhauer uses for their
boomvangs. As far as I know, 304 is somewhat more flexible than 316.
Good luck with redoing the clamps.

Regards,
Mike

Mike,
the previous owner had the bracket custom-made, so it probably isn’t
the same as the Garhauer stuff. When the wind twisted the bracket,
the open end on the starboard side rode up over the edge of the
track, but didn’t go any farther.
