Did anybody out there notice the “Winch Buddy” ad in the latest Sail
Mag.? Seems like this company has converted A right angle drive
Milwaukee drill to do exactly what a bunch of people have been
trying, with apparently varying degrees of sucess.
It can be seen at winchbuddy.com Looks like it goes for around a
grand. Is this a new product, or have I been off the planet too long?
PWM
Looking at winch buddy at and Milwaukee tool gives following breakdown
Price of the Milwaukee drill $310 + shipping = about $325
Bit to engage winch about $50 (saw this item on an earlier post)
Total cost $375
Profit to Winch Buddy about $625

OK, lets see, Milwaukee markets their 18volt right angle drill for
use in raising sails on sail boat how much??? On the other hand, a
company trying to make a buck directing a product to a niche that
milwaukee has heretofore ignored or been unaware of, gee, I think
were talking about an entrepreneur here in a capitalistic system,
shame! How many of us have counted our time spent in researching a
problem like this, yet we hesitate to compensate a company who may
have done it right at no time cost to us. I think it might be worth
it in the overall scheme of things, but what do I know?

Let’s see now.
2 Years ago I went to a Sears outlet and bought a refurbished Sears 18 volt for
$70. I then went to a local machine shop and had them make up a bit to fit the
winch $30. Total $100. Works great. Now am I smart for having done this before
all the talk about it, of stupid for not marketing it??
I just thought that it reallly was not all that clever an idea, and that most
anyone intersted could do the same for themselves. I guess that you cannever
underestimate the public.
