Winch for F38 head sail

Posted by John Moran (sv_major_38@…>)

Hello Fellow Freedom Enthusiasts:

I am adding a furling head sail (yes, in place of the self tacking jib), and need to add a couple of winches. I am wondering if anyone has a Barient 23, or there about, or a Lewmar 40 or equivalent, either one or a pair. They (it) must be self-tailing. I am in Annapolis Maryland and can trade locally if someone has something close or only one is available.

You can have a roller furling jib and it can also be self tacking. Works very well. You would only need one small winch. See how they rig a soling or a C & C, Mega 30.

John,

What would the winch be used for? It would be such a small sail I would see why it couldn’t be done by hand. I am not familiar with the F36/38 rig (yet…), but am having a hard time picturing what why and where… (I will look at the MEGA on the C&C site to see if it makes more sense…)

Also would be interested if anyone on the list is using one, and if they have any comments about it, as far a how it affects their sailing performance…

Thanks,

Self tacking jib andf roller furling.

I have cruised and raced with this set up for 5 years, a C & C ultralight . I could run up on the headfoil a 150 % roller furling genoa, in which case it was not self tacking but gave a lot of extra sail area when needed. However, most of the time I ran a 90 + % jib on the headfoil and normaly left it on for frequent sails. I even raced, and won , single handed, with this setup when there was much tacking up narrows. Gave me a good edge as there were no delays or screewups on tacking. Just like a catboat.
Downwind, the jib does not support itself ( leech hangs somewhat ) which is the reason Hoyt came up with the Jib boom which holds the clew and leech up downwind. Only advantage that I can see. But, having lived with a boomed headsail on a cutter I once owned ( W 32 ) I would not want to live with a club on the bow again. Also, it gets in the way of windlass, etc when anchoring.
This self tacking setup has a roller furler on which there is a 90+% jib that may have a vertical batten on the leech to support a little roach. This sail has a 6 to 9 inch clew board to which a line is attached. This line goes aft to a block on an athwartships traveller just ahead of the mast . Then this line ( jib sheet ) goes forward to a deck block near the bow where it does a 180 turn to go aft to a small snubbing winch on the coach roof. GREAT setup. Best for any lightweight sloop. If sloops were designed with a large enough rig, big main small jib, from the start we would not need overlapping genoas. Sounds like a FREEDOM to me !

HI Brad and Family,

I have found that trying to bring in or hold any sail by the dint of my personal muscular desterity has been tiring and indeed inadequate, especially over time.

I am an ocean sailor who does this solo, hence I believe a winch will greatly extend my ability to survive. If you don’t have any idea where I may purchase one that’s ok.

Thanks for your reply,
John

Andre,

Thank you for your reply, but do you know of self tacking a 155? Perhaps not a 155, I had a fine C & C 30, good racer with plenty of 1sts, but I am confused by the suggestion.

Sorry, self tacking of a headsail where the foot is greater than J is just not possible. It could be automated however, a some cost. Does not seem practical.

Perhaps, in order to get a larger headsail, a nose pole of some kind could be adapted, but with possible balance problems as one heads up to close hauled.
