I have two winches on my freedom 35 a two speed Harken 42 and a power
two speed 44. I want to clean and oil them, but I can’t figure out
how to begin taking them apart. I downloaded the service manuals, but
they weren’t too clear. The manual winch has a screw down in the
socket, but when I try to turn it counter clockwise, it just turns the
winch in the low speed. The power winch doesn’t have a screw but a
piece that pushes down a cutoff switch when a winch handle is inserted.
I’m sure all you long time boat owners service your winches all the
time and I’m egually sure its just something stupid I’m missing. Any
help would be greatly appreciated.

I’m not familiar with your winches, however, most disasemble by removing a snap ring on top of the drum assembly. Some winches have have split rings (like a
key ring) that if you look closely at the top of the winch you can see around
the shaft. There are special tools for removing them but a screwdriver will do.
Once that’s off everything just lifts off. I don’t know if your
winches like this but its pretty common.

The self-tailing Barients disassemble by unscrewing the
tailing “stripper”…not entirely intuitive, but very workable.
Surely there’s a “blown-up” parts diagram of your Harkens floating
around on the net somewhere…

Some dont-you have to remove what the Brits call a circlip.
Otherwise,all greasing and oiling (only)of the pawls is straightforward
