Wind!

Posted by emmylou307 (emmylou307@…>)

Hi All - it’s blowing 15 to 20 with gusts 25 to 30 out of the NW
across LIS this afternoon. We are going to go out on a reefed main
and have some fun! But no messing with the kite today…

I would like a little shared knowledge here: what strength winds do
you use what sail combos in? What is the max. wind you would fly the
spinnaker? What windspeed do you put reef 1 in the main? What about
the staysail? Does anyone ever use reef2 as a reef or just a
cunningham?

Hope you are all having as much fun sailing as we are!

I will take some photos of recent inprovements to Emmylou and post
along with description of:

  • new electrical panel, wiring and main fuse
  • new hatch (Bomar/Gray)
  • new solar panel (ICP)
  • new VHF (Uniden)
  • my Sony laptop/E-Trex GPS combo at the nav

Sean–
I find that I’m overpowered at 20 kts and reef at that point. I want
to try some experimenting with my blade jib when I have an able-
bodied mate aboard to see if the lower sail plan will hold up to that
much canvas. Also, I think that securing the tack to the chute spar
and pushing it foreward will give me more windward ability. I’ve had
it heard of folks flying the chute alone in 40 kts, but I’ve only had
it up at about 20 and my daughter executed an accedental jibe and
stood us on our beam ends. That was pretty exciting, and nothing
broke, so all was well. I’ve not been in winds high enough to
require a second reef, but I would guess that 30+ would be a safe
number. Things get pretty choppy on the Chesapeake when the wind
blows, so I tend to be a bit conservative. Also, I have a shallow
keel which makes my hold on solid water shakey when the rail
approaches the water. Let me know what your experiences are when the
wind blows.

Look forward to pictures. I also need to replace my hatch. Did you buy it at pompanette. If so. Are you happy with it?? Real interested in your pc placement onboard. Do you have a staysail???emmylou307 <emmylou307@…> wrote: Hi All - it’s blowing 15 to 20 with gusts 25 to 30 out of the NW across LIS this afternoon. Thanks for the insights Chris. Good to hear that you
have managed 20+, even
with your shoal keel. I will post my experiences as I
get more sailing in.

Sean and Vivian,

In re your questions about the part of the exhaust vent hanging down
too far, just take that piece off. I have the same exhust fan and
that’s what I did.

BTW, what’s the line from your boom to the back of the boat?
