Windlass and anchor setup for a 36''

Posted by Nhat Khong (nhatkhong1@…>)

Hello all,

I’m replacing my existing rope only windlass with a Lewmar V700 rope &
chain w/o capstan. Currently, I have a 35lb CQR which I will reuse.
I’m planning to get a Danforth for the stern.

There have been several previous messages posted regarding windlass
and anchor selection but not much info specifically for a 36 footer.
So here are some questions I have. I’m planning a long distance sail
from Los Angeles to New Orleans via the Panama Canal.

  1. Is a 35lbs CQR adedquate for the 36 footer?
  2. I’m planning to use about 100 ft chain and 300 ft rope. Any advice
    on that?
  3. the Lewmar V700 is rated for a 25-35 foot sailboat. Will this be
adequate for my Gary Mull 36’?
  4. V700 is a vectical windlass. I noticed our anchor locker is not
tremendiously big. Will that be an issue?
  5. 22lb Danforth with 400 foot rope rode adequate as a stern anchor?
  6. Should I get the capstan model? Has anyone found it very useful?
  7. Anyone with this same setup… any mounting advice?

All advice and suggestions are welcome.

Thanks,

-Nhat

Nhat, I have used CQR’s for hundreds of nights at anchor mostly on the East Coast of US, the Gulf of Mexico, the California coast and the Bahamas. I then switched to a Delta which I, and others cruisers in these areas, have found to be much superior. However a friend of mine who has gone through the same progression and has now sailed 1/2 way round the world has switched to an anchor ( comes under different names ) that looks somewhat like a Delta at the shank and an inverted plow, shovel like, with a semi-circular rod as a crown. Says it is much superior to all anchors. My 35 lb Delta held my 27,000 lb, 41 foot ketch ( lots of windage ) safely in 70 kt gusts. Scarry ! A 45 lb would have been better for that boat. Sleep better ! The 35 lb is sufficient for a 36 footer, bigger is often better. I have just calculated that I have spent over 1500 nights at anchor. Even in a cat.1 hurricane, STUPID ! I had 2 CQR’s a 35 lb
and a 45 lb on my W 32, all chain,100 feet on one and 200 on other. 100 feet of 3/8 inch chain is sufficient for the shallow East Coast. I had 300 feet of 3/8 in. chain on the US West Coast on same Westsail 32. Corrosion problems with the S-L 555 windlass but very strong and 2 speed. In some bottom conditions the Danforth ( ooze ) was surprisingly good. I have prefered a manual all bronze horizontal windlass, amongst a few others, and have found it less trouble. Only used it for the last several feet of chain or to break the anchor free. Most important it must be very hefty and rock solid. Andre I believe the anchor you refer to as utilized by your friend, is a ROCNA anchor from New Zealand. Impressive test results and a compelling web site. Thanks!! I will definitely look into and consider the Rocna anchor.
I’m still curious about the windlass setup. Does anyone else have any
advice on the windlass for a 36’?
