Greetings all. Anybody out there have a (gently) used winter cover for the
Freedom 33 Cat
Ketch? Has anyone had a good experience with having one made?
Thanks,

Hongo,
for the past 3 years I’ve shrunkwrap Bright Star. I built a simple
frame out of emt bent to the right shapes. for stringers I used the
strapping you buy for the shrinkwrapping. The shrinkwrap for a 40 CK
costs about $80-$100/year, and you can usually borrow a heat gun, or
buy a cheap roofing torch which will do the job if you’re careful about
hotspots. It cost lest than $40 to build the frame, and with the yearly
expendables I’d say I spent $150 - $200. Even at the outside of $200,
that’s $640 for 3 winters.
compare that to the $5000 or so that a new fairclough will cost you.
Plus storing the cover and a more elaborate frame.
Of course, the faircloughs do look good and they’ll last forever,
properly cared for, so it’s really about what makes sense for you. You
may be able to find one used, as we did for our 45 this year, so it
makes more sense for us than it did to have one made new.

I had one made by the Canvas Store in Huntington. The work quality is
only fair, with single line of stitching ,not double,no bar tacking at
the end of stitch lines, grommets that come out, etc. The material is good
The fit was NOT GOOD,and he has not modified it. The owner promises the
world, and delivers far less. My F33 was the first he made, and I cannot
get him to modify some serious fitting errors. He says I am stupid and
inept, and that is why it doesn’t fit well. If you can put up with his
BS,you can have a cover made by him. I am fed up with his treatment and
surliness, and cannot, therefore, really recommend his product.

Hey Lance,
I have been using tarps to cover my boat (F32) which seems
to work ok. I can get a few seasons out of each one (I need 3) and I
don’t have to take the mast down.
How difficult is this process? Can someone from Maine
handle it???
Thanks,
TW
