Good afternoon colleagues. I took some of the wood elements out of my
boat this morning–the rails that surround the sink and nav station,
the cabinet doors, and some other little strips. I’d like to spruce
them up, and I have a question: Are they teak, and should they be
treated with a teak wood type treatment, or are they some other wood
type, and would they most benefit from a varnish type treatment like I
gave my tiller last year?
Also, I broke all the corroded screws holding the sink in while trying
to unscrew them. Any idea where another sink might be had?

Teak was often oiled during the 70s and 80s. Today it is usually
varnished. Oiling will darken the teak. Tung oil is very good but very
time consuming. I used a lemon grass oil in the fall, allowing it to
soak in over the winter.
As for the sink, look around. I think the size is equivalant to a “bar
sink” which may be available at any of the home improvement chain
stores. Back in the early 80s, the boat builders weren’t as specialized
as they are today. You may be able to find someone who can weld
stainless to spot weld on new some threaded bolts.

Thanks John. I just finished cleaning the pieces and applying the
first coat of “Yankee Teak Oil”, so oil it is. There are some serial
numbers on the sink which I may pursue via computer, but I have 6
months, so there’s no rush on that.
Sean, as for “presents” for “Gracie”, the list is long, and only time
and money stand in our way. I’m thinking of a furler and a staysail
as the big items. I’d also like an inflatable life-vest, some new
shock-cords for my line organizers, maybe an inside dome light, and
maybe I’ll wire up a socket in the cockpit for plugging in a search
light or whatever. I have to replace my anchor light too, and a GPS
would be nice.
I recently got permission to moor in Salem harbor, so I have to save
a few bucks for mooring gear. All around a pricey little holiday
season on the horizon, but there should be enough left over to feed
the kids.
