Yanmar fuel pump - solution?

I can’t find the thread but someone was discussing a squishy or inoperable fuel pump.

Back in the eighties I was rounding Cape Small heading home to Kittery, ME into the wind and the
Yanmar quit; I could sail to East in light wind and finally made it to Harpswell harbor in Casco bay.
My fuel pump was squishy and would not prime so I dingyed to shore and lobsterman gentleman drove me to a Yanmar mechanic so I could buy a new pump.

The mechanic said “you do not need a new pump, just open it up and tighten the Philip screws holding the diaphram, they get loose”. I bought a new pump anyway, not sure the guy was correct.

In any case when I returned to the boat I did what he said and every thing was fine. May not work for every one but it sure worked for me.

Next day wife went swimming in the harbor, we were the only boat.there, I think it was about a year ago that a woman swimming in Harpwell was killed by a Bull Shark.
