Couple of questions on my Yanmar if anyone can help please…
I have a Yanmar 3GMD --has anyone installed an hour meter
on one of these – attachment point wiring?
Checking the impeller location (new boat for us) it seems
the easiest way to change it is to remove the pump bracket first since that
only involves two bolts whereas the impeller face plate needs a dexterous hand
an a right angle screwdriver – which I hate using! Am I correct?
On my 3GM the impeller for the internal
coolant sounds similar in location. Due to this and the need for speed in
changing an impeller in tight quarters (has happened to me) I installed the
type of cover with thumbscrews and a rubber seal. The bottom openings for the
thumbscrews are slots so you just take out the top 2 and slide the cover up and
off. But given the location it can still be difficult to get the old impeller
out. Very easy for inspection though.

Hi Ron,
I purchased from Mack Boring a hour meter (have not installed it yet). It fits
into the alarm circle, the alarm can be tied behind the plate and will be
audible. As far as the wiring I will check for a diagram when I am at the boat.
On my F 36/38 the back plate ifor the impeller is servicable with out the need
to remove the bracket.

Hr meter can be wired on the “switched” side of ignition switch. Yes, you are correct, removing the entire pump is the best way. Why Yanmar mounted it backwards is a mystery. I talked to a fellow in Europe who makes a special bracket to mount it with the cover facing forward… Still waiting on detail of how to do this.

Van

It
is much safer to install the hour meter, as Van says, to the switched side of
the ignition. If you mess around with the warning buzzer and break it, it
costs $175 to replace.

It also sound like the same location area on the 2GM20F, two bolts flip over the pump and six small screws. I seen an ad for the thumb screws and it sounds like a good idea. I have a T-bar and socket in a zip lock bag with a new impeller and gasket under the nav station ready to go. I did one change out on my trip back from Oriental, NC in 25+ winds and rough seas and it only took 15 minutes to do. I did however do lots of reading prior to this episode so in my mind I was ready and done several times already.BobOn Fri, May 9, 2008 at 8:23 AM, Alan Kusinitz wrote:On my 3GM the impeller for the internal coolant sounds similar in location. I
installed the Speed Seal cover on the raw water pump on my former F30. It is a
lovely piece of kit, and I never had to use it in an emergency. However, I did
find that I usually removed the pump before removing the Speed Seal cover
because while the cover was easy to remove backwards, the impeller was not.

Thanks- I have new hour meter I kept as a spare for the Hurricane
Heater on my old trawler. I assume anything that will give it 12 volts when
running will work. I guess the question is how to wire it up? Your feedback
appreciated.
Yes I have used the Speedseal covers with thumbscrews on
previous boats and they’re nice, if pricey. But this baby is in a hairy
backass position. It would appear a lot easier just to remove the two bolts on
the vee belt bracket no?
Presumably by switched side you mean the circuit AFTER the
ignition switch ie: switching on the ignition activates the meter?? Probably a
stupid question but that is where I would put it I think.
