Hi, I just signed up to this blog. I have a Freedom 38 in Italy. I'd like to modify the jib by installing a furler. I'm looking for a boom to install on the deck, or alternatively, a drawing of how to build one.
You’re looking for a Hoyt Jib Boom. Not sure if they’re available in Italy, but the US distributor is Forespar. It was invented by Gary Hoyt, the founder of Freedom Yachts.
Thank you very much. In Italy, there's only my boat, so I can't find any spare parts for the Freedom. I'll try looking at the company you mentioned. You know how it works compared to the original jib installed by the shipyard. See you soon!
Hello, I contacted Forespar but they haven't carried it for a long time (although it's still on the website)
Hello Francesco,
I’m have just bought a F36 and came with a standard jib and furler. Looks neat and simple. I haven’t sail it yet ( waiting for next summer in the great lakes).
This is the only picture I have but it will give you a general idea.
Best regards
Paolo Abelli
Hello , hanks Paolo, that sounds like a good idea. If it doesn’t work, I can build it later. I’ll keep you updated. See you soon!
Francesco
Hi,
How is the jib set up now ? Not sure if you are familiar with the “Camber Spar” ? Are you a new owner?
Here is some detail on the stock Camber spar that most still have.
Here some more info on the Hoyt Jib Boom. Sounds like others have successfully converted to it.
Also curious how other boats have rigged a roller furler ? Does anything special need to be done to allow for the flexing of the carbon mast.
Having a Hoyt Jib boom and a furler would have the advantage of making it easier to douse the jib.
Reminds me I need to add forestay inspection to my spring list.
Is it spring yet ?
Hello everyone, I've had the Freedom 38 for three years. It sails beautifully and I'm very happy with it. The only thing that's a little uncomfortable is the jib when you have to lower it and stow it. I've seen Freedom sails with a modified jib system featuring a furler and a boom at the outhaul. I looked for the kit at Forespar, but it's no longer available. I'm thinking of building my own.
this is my F38
this is the change I would like to make
