Freedom 40/40 - topping lift install

I am going to install a Dutchman system on my 40/40. The main is a beast. But to do so I need a topping lift. And I don’t know if it’s possible to install one. I will have the mast out for another repair.

My 40/40 has a topping lift, so I know it’s possible. Actually when I bought it the boom vang was shot so the topping lift was doing double duty. And she has a heavy furling boom! The PO said the topping lift was set up to be an emergency main halyard as well, but I’ve never tried it.

I have a Dutchman as well, but not installed yet, so I’m interested to see how you make out with it.

blue moon is getting a new stack pack from Harding Sails this spring. The canvas will utilize the existing lazyjacks and a couple 1” battens to create shape and volume. Harding’s canvas maker, Christine, was concerned about the lack of a topping lift to extend over 18’ of zipper. I saw a setup on a brand new boat and showed her a picture. We decided to mimic the setup.
After spending way too much time online “researching “, I eventually landed on the inevitable: the boom end fitting from Sailrite specifically designed for the purpose. About two hundred bucks, shipped.

Let us know how that boom fitting works out. Its a royal pain in the ass to get the zipper started on my stack pack due to not having somewhere to tie off the end of the zipper. Also without having a topping lift, you have to rely on your lazy jacks to elevate your boom if you have a tired boom vang spring.

rigging the sail rite hardware this week. launching this month. I’ve received approval from the CFO to pay Thurston of Bristol,RI to rig the sails. We derived last fall and it was a real struggle with the main. After the boat arrives in her home port of Mattapoisett, Harding will rig the stack pack. We are really looking forward to this.

Please post a picture of it . Im super curious. The one issue that i thought of when I looked at the dimensions of the bracket is that it might not be as tall as my stack pack. But maybe thats ok.

Attachment point for topping lift on my 40/40, Nuages.

New mainsail from Thurston Quantum.
Fantastic sail in Narragansett Bay today.

I’m so excited about this topic! We’re also in Mattapoissett - hooe to see you out there. We just brought ours into the harbor yesterday. We have a 40/40 and use the spare halyard as a topping lift. I made a stack pack a couple years ago with the SailRite guide. It’s not perfect because how heavy the sail is and we keep trying to perfect it. The back end from SailRite would be great - thanks for the pic. I like the idea of a couple battens to tighten up the shape. I might try that on my next iteration. Please send pics in the Dutchman system. Happy sailing!

MarcJ - is that the attachment from SailRite?

That bracket looks perfect ! Thanks for sharing

You’re on your mooring already? Impressed. We hope to launch by week’s end. It’s a two day trip to MBY so best case we arrive Sunday.

Looks very shipshape. Who made the stack pack?

After doing some research, the Mack Sails large boom bracket is the one in the picture posted above in this thread. I just ordered one. $150 plus about $25 to ship to RI. The sailrite one looked a little too small for me. My stack pack is extra tall so i felt like I needed all the height I could get.

Ahh, good call. Who made the stack pack?

quantum made it. And the lazy jacks are doing double duty at the moment to pick up the slack that the vang isnt doing. 35 years of pressure on that spring has caused it to sag. I think i will have to add a topping lift if the vang’g guts are corroded and preventing its adjustment.

Any chance you can send a pic of the back attachment you have on your boom that holds the back of the Stack Pack? The stack pack looks great!

Riki

The lower aft corners of the stack pack have a short length of rigging line that goes around the end of the boom. Theres a little pad eye that the line goes through back there to hold it captive. But i need the bracket so I can hold the zipper captive and maybe hold a turning block so i can close the zipper from standing at the mast.

Thank you. The sailmaker told me cant get to it until at leaast August. But I will send photos when done.

Installed the mack sails large boom bracket this morning. Its going to greatly improve dealing with the stack pack zipper. Once i get the mainsail rigged, I will attach the zipper to the bracket and attach a turning block to the bracket so i can close the zipper up from the mast using a continuous loop of small gauge

line.

Looks great. How did you decide on the location of the bracket? Looks like you went as close to the weld on the boom end as possible. Did you have any difficulty drilling?
