Headsail questions

I have a couple of foresail questions about the Pedrick 35 and the 40/40. From what I can tell, the 35 is about 70% and the 40 is about 80%.

I’m curious about adding a second stay on the 35 at about 80% to get a cutter ish setup.

I’m also curious about the feasibility of rigging a light wind sail to the masthead. Seems like a waste to fly a spinnaker sized for a 25ft boat on one of these.

I’ve read a lot about these boats and it seems that most folks don’t find much lacking in the sail plan, but since I’m in ‘dreaming and planning mode,’ I’m just hoping to find out how dumb my ideas are.

Good question! I have been dreaming the same dreams… The solution I came up with would to add a Seldon bow pole to my port anchor roller and run a code zero with one of those neat furlers that has the hard batten tape going up the luff to the mast head. I believe this setup would be nice and safe up to around 15 knots

Hello - lots of interest here. I run an asymmetrical using an ATN tacker on my furled headsail and tacked to the fore of my bow roller. Head is to a sheave just above the jib sheave at 7/8 th. I’d be Leary of running a spinnaker or asymmetrical to the mast head as the stresses would be high. Mack Sails told me not to run my asymmetrical in more than 12 kts AWS. - experience has shown me I believe him! I do have an additional sheave at mast head for a second main halyard if needed.

Interesting info.

Don’t have a spin that came with boat but have several I’d like to try.

So what has been said is no to top of mast, that actually makes sense to me as the main is bigger than most boats.

Interested in more info what others have done or do.

Thanks. I suspected the top would be a no go and I certainly consider the folks at Mack with listening to.

Do you find your asym worth flying? Do you fly it alone or with the main? Is it a pain to set up around the jib boom (assuming you still have it)?

Always liked the idea of the JibTop Reacher on a top down furler for light air close reaching. Have not researched it much. Would Need to think about how to get sheets from rail to cabintop winch without rubbing on coamings.

You would ideally have winches on your cockpit combing. Lucky for me, my 40/40 has them

Poor pic but…. ATN tacker on furled headsail, ATN tacked to forward tip of bow roller ( small bow sprint would be better. I added 2 harken 35.2 winches to p/s back of coaming. Works well DDW wing on wing or jibing downwind. Use outside jibe rigging Only use it with at least 1 crew. Use with full main. Novelty.

What’s the difference between flying that and your jib?

I see you’ve rigged your jib on a roller - is it still self tacking? Original size?

The asymmetrical is huge. As far as I can tell the F35 has always had a furler . I put on a new Schafer furler in 2023. It is self tacking - makes life simple.

Right on. What kinda speed increase do you see, on average? And what point of sail do you find it extends to?

(buncha questions since I’m hoping to be running the same ish setup in the next few months)

Wing on wing in 14-15 twos ddw we’ve hit 10+ kts, with full main. With full main at 120 degrees or so in 12-15 AWS similar. Main blanketing the asymmetrical can occur. Small bow sprit or even a pole help that which I don’t do.

No pole because it’s sketchy to drill the carbon?

It’s true holes in the CF can’t be great - even though we all have many holes already with the mainsail track, etc. - one can use around the mast clamps instead. My reason for not is I don’t use the asymmetrical enough to warrant a pole
